A Grant Opportunity Calls

Voting is officially open for the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest. There are life-changing amounts of money and business services up for grabs, even for the lowest tier winners, so we are taking this contest very seriously, and we're hoping to get a hand from you, our beloved fans and followers. You can vote daily through April 1st, 2019, and you can also take a few moments to share this information with your friends and family in hopes that they too will vote for Lit. on Fire Used Books. Vote for us here daily through April 1st! Why vote for Lit. on Fire Used Books?

Our mission is bigger than us: Reducing Environmental Impact. Reconnecting the Community. Reviving Bohemia. We strive to uphold this mission in SO many ways, with integrity, originality, and boldness. Being LGBT+ owned and operated means a safe space for all, as well as offering fundraising opportunities for valuable local resources that impact the LGBT+ community, such as Friends of Central Illinois. Jessica is also a domestic violence survivor, who rose from the ashes a fierce advocate for survivors, and now aims powerful fundraising efforts every year to the shelter that helped her reclaim her life, Center for Prevention of Abuse. We even have a domestic violence lending library in store that includes some Spanish language titles and children's books, and it does not require an exchange of information, so no one has to feel stigmatized for needing resources on the subject. Lit. on Fire Used Books focuses on reconnecting the community through a myriad of culturally relevant events, most of which are provided free to the public and are always engaging and welcoming. Events that have made history include Drag Queen Story Hour, Adult Read-Ins, Film screenings for local filmmakers such as The Daily Aesthetics of Alexander Martin by Allison Walsh, and too many more to count. Monthly offerings include a nonfiction book club, an LGBT+ book club, and our open mic series called Get Lit. which is a living, breathing companion to our homegrown, handmade publication of the same name. Get Lit. Zine showcases local poetry, stories, art, and photography from local talent, and is hand-collaged by Jessica on every page, making each issue a literal work of art and homage to the DIY culture she grew up with. Black and white copies are always free to the public, and color copies are sold in store to help recover printing costs. Throw in environmentally friendly practices and a sincere, open, and honest owner who speaks freely about her traumas and struggles with mental illness, and you have a recipe for real success and an opportunity to touch lives well beyond the platform of bookselling. We're all about the books here too, providing a curated selection that's ever-changing and constantly evolving, while focusing the selection on what people in the community are really looking for. We can order (and preorder!) new books for you and have them delivered to the shop, your home, or even sent to a loved one from afar. You can order new books, movies, music, and gifts from our Online Store with free shipping, which gives your neighborhood indie a leg up when it comes to our biggest online competitors. We also provide an honor system loaded with early readers and picture books for young children. Low-income parents and educators especially benefit from this system, as people are welcomed to either take a book/ leave a book, or take as many as needed and leave a donation amount of choice in the donation jar, which also helps us fund Get Lit. Zine publications. There is no doubt that Lit. on Fire Used Books has done so much for the community it serves, and even winning the bronze level prize would help us serve the community even better and provide more opportunities for growth and security, keeping us an anchor for Peoria's vibrant cultural livelihood for many years to come. Please vote for us today and every day through April 1st. It takes less than one minute of your time. Thank you SO MUCH for believing in this dream, and helping us to grow it every step of the way. <3
